SINGHEALTH CAREER DAY 2025

19 July 2025, Saturday

At SingHealth’s Career Day 2025, medical students and house officers had the opportunity explore various booths and attend specialty talks where our members had the opportunity to understand more about the programme requirements and what a day in their working life entails.

Members particularly enjoyed the hands-on nature of the booths where interested participants had the opportunity to have a go at simple procedures on mannequins. Additionally, members had the opportunity to engage with current residents and programme directors who enthusiastically shared about their specialties and career pathways.

SMSUK would like to extend a keen appreciation for SingHealth’s efforts in organising this event. We look forward to closer collaborations in the future.

NUHS CAREER GUIDANCE FAIR 2025

12 July 2025, Saturday

NUHS Career Guidance Fair served as an invaluable platform for both local and international medical students as well as current house officers to learn more about the different residency programmes offered by NUHS.

Interested participants gathered on a Saturday morning to listen to various talks on the different specialties and had the opportunity to network with like-minded peers and explore the different booths.

Notably, SMSUK had the privilege of having a booth at the fair where we connected with other international medical students, local graduates and returning IMGs.

A dedicated meetup for international students was held by the Early Career Guidance Centre with Adjunct Professor Shirley Ooi and a panel of current residents in attendance. This session provided our members with a chance to address their concerns on coming back to Singapore to work and gain insights to the transition back to Singapore’s healthcare system.

SMSUK is grateful to NUHS for the opportunity to be a part of this year’s Career Guidance Fair. We look forward to continued collaborations with NUHS!

SMSUK GOES BOULDERING

14 July 2025, Monday

On the 14th of July 2025, our members made their way to Sembawang Boulder Planet, as part of our once-off “SMSUK goes bouldering” event. Participants were delighted at the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new acquaintances and for the beginners in our midst, try their hands at something new.

Through shared laughter, encouraging cheers and even a few falls, this event fostered a stronger sense of community amongst our members - many of whom had never bouldered before and for those who had, selflessly stepped up as informal instructors for the beginners. The day concluded with a hearty meal at ‘A Hot Hideout’ where members exchanged their highlights of the day and reflected on stories of their past academic year.

SMSUK would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and made the day such a memorable success! Special shout out to our dedicated M&C sub-committee for helping to film and capture the moments. We hope that our members had a fruitful and fulfilling time. We would also like to thank Boulder Planet for sponsoring this event and we look forward to more exciting collaborations in the future.

NHG CAREER DAY 2025

5 July 2025, Saturday

NHG Careers Day served as an open house concept for medical students and house officers to learn about the different residency programs that NHG offers. The event was held on 5th of July 2025 at the Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI) and had many highlights including speciality talks and booths available.

A medical student’s engagement session was held at the start where we were briefed about the training routes and progression in the Singapore healthcare system. Participants then broke out to attend different speciality talks such as psychiatry, dermatology as well as the newly-initiated Hospital Clinician scheme.

Members also had the invaluable opportunity to try out some of their hands-on activities such as using a laparoscopy machine and also take part in a mindbending pathology quiz. It was a great and enriching atmosphere being able to connect with engaging consultants who are willing to stop by on their rest day and have a meaningful conversation with us. We thank NHG for organizing an incredible careers day event for us to learn about the different specialties they offer and quell our fears about working in Singapore.

Mandarin History Taking Class

20 July 2025, Sunday

SMSUK’s annual language classes began on July 17th with the “History Taking in Mandarin” class. This event was supported by Dr Jarret Ng, who led and organised the lesson, alongside other doctors who assisted with small-group teaching. Attendees were first introduced to basic Mandarin phrases used in clinical settings, after which they had the opportunity to practise their skills in simulated clinical scenarios. In small groups, doctors gave personalised feedback and addressed questions on handling different patient interactions. By the end of the class, attendees had gained useful colloquialisms and practical phrases, leaving them more confident in handling patient interactions in Mandarin. Once again, we would like to thank all the doctors for their help with this class!

BEACH CLEAN-UP

13 July 2025, Sunday

SMSUK had the pleasure of organising our annual SMSUK Gives Back - an initiative aimed at bringing our members together to do community service. This year, we carried out a Beach Clean-Up where volunteers were able to contribute to environmental sustainability in a meaningful way.

Our members gathered at East Coast Park on a Sunday, equipped with metal tongs, buckets, with a shared purpose - to reduce marine litter and protect our coastal ecosystems. Afterwards, we ended the day on a high note at East Coast Lagoon Food Village where we exchanged the highlights of our day. As a small token of appreciation, SMSUK sponsored satays for all volunteers. A small gesture to recognise the effort and heart each person brought to the initiative.

Beyond the clean-up itself, the event served as a valuable opportunity for connection. Members bonded over shared experiences of studying abroad and exchanged stories about their upcoming summer plans. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who took part, the committee members who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and the Public Hygiene Council for their generous support and guidance. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment were instrumental in making this event a success.

PEG Information Session 2025

21 June 2025, Saturday

The PEG Information Session is an annual online event organised by SMSUK with the aim of assisting members in making a more informed decision regarding the grant. This session aims to provide prospective applicants with a platform to engage with and learn from seniors who have successfully obtained the grant in previous years.

This year’s session saw the participation of over 50 attendees from a diverse range of UK medical schools, as well as Singaporean students intending to apply to UK institutions. Participants had an enriching and insightful experience, gaining a clearer understanding of the overall PEG application process, including the timeline, interview structure, and key considerations when applying.

The speakers also shared their personal experiences and thoughtfully articulated the factors that influenced their own decisions to apply for the PEG. Attendees particularly appreciated the candid and honest exchange of perspectives, which offered a realistic and practical view of what to expect. The session also provided valuable guidance on how best to prepare for the application process, helping attendees feel more confident and equipped to take the next steps.

We hope the insights shared not only clarified the application journey but also inspired more students to consider applying for the PEG. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our speakers for their time, this event would not have been possible without their support.
